Another day, another record shattered by Taylor Alison Swift. With the release of ‘1989 (Taylor’s Version)’, Swift has broken her own previously-held record and has invented a few new ones to smash, too.
With over 1.6 million units in the US and over 3.5 million globally, this makes her the first artist in history to score six No.1 album debuts with over one million units sold. ‘1989 (Taylor’s Version)’ has notched the biggest first-week sales for a re-recorded album ever and emerged as the first album to debut with a million units sold first-week twice. It also eclipsed the 2014 first-week sales for ‘1989’, making it the first ‘Taylor’s Version’ re-record to net a bigger debut than the original.
She’s not stopped there, either. Taylor Swift is now the first female artist to earn 13 No.1 debuts on the Billboard 200 and has tied with Drake for the artist with the most No.1 albums on the Billboard 200 this Century.
You could say she’s doing rather well.
‘1989 (Taylor’s Version)’ featured five new ‘From The Vault’ tracks – never-before-heard songs that Taylor reportedly wrote at the time of 1989, but didn’t make the cut.
Of the five tracks – ‘Slut!’, ‘Say Don’t Go’, ‘Now That We Don’t Talk’, ‘Suburban Legends’ and ‘Is It Over Now?’ – the latter has been played the most, with 57million Spotify streams at the time of writing.
‘Is It Over Now?’, details a relationship on the outs with both parties finding solace elsewhere. In the track which some fans have speculated is about Swift’s brief relationship with Harry Styles, she asks: “Was it over when she laid down on your couch / Was it over when he unbuttoned my blouse?”.
Swift will begin the Latin America leg of her Eras Tour in Buenos Aires next week, where Pitchfork reports a group of eager fans have been camping out in rotation since June, in order to get the best spot inside the venue. We wish them the best of luck.
