Billie Eilish has spoken about her struggles to maintain a balanced relationship with her fans as she’s getting steadily more popular.
The teen superstar is the subject of a new documentary, The World’s A Little Blurry, which will arrive on Apple TV+ on Friday (February 26).
During an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Eilish discussed her feelings on fame and wanting to have a bond with her fans. “It’s half the time that I feel like I need to give them more and half the time like I feel I give too much,” she said.
“It’s a funny balance because since the beginning I’ve wanted to have a relationship with the fans that I would have wanted as a fan. That was my goal. I wanted to be the artist that I would want to be a fan of. When I was younger, it seemed so easy. The bigger it’s gotten, it’s gotten really hard because it’s not easy to be accessible to everyone – and especially because there are some creeps out there.
“You want to be accessible to the good ones but how are you gonna make yourself accessible if you can’t be accessible to the bad ones?”
Eilish continue to discuss how she always tries to give her fans good moments, even when she’s not feeling it herself. “I find myself being like, ‘Oh my god, I don’t wanna take a picture’ – in my head thinking that – but then I’m like, ‘You know what, you know how minor this is for me to do to make somebody really happy?,’” she explained.
“It’s really just like you forget that but you have to remember that that moment means so much to those people. The smallest moment can mean the biggest thing.”
During the interview, the singer also touched on her second album, saying it might not have been written now if it wasn’t for the pandemic. “I made an album in [quarantine] and I don’t think I would have made the same album or even the album at all if it weren’t for COVID,” she said. “That doesn’t mean that it’s about COVID at all, but when things are different in your life, you’re different. It’s just how it is.”
She also teased some powerful vocal moments on the record when Colbert asked her if she would ever belt out a track. “There’s a couple moments on this album where I pull some tricks out,” she replied. “It’s just about what I feel like sounds good. You’ll get a little bit. It’ll come.”
Last year, Eilish released a handful of new songs, including ‘My Future’ and November’s ‘Therefore I Am’. She also shared ‘No Time To Die’, the theme song for the next Bond film, which is now due out in October.
