Mahalia and Rico Nasty have teamed up on a new song called ‘Jealous’.
The track marks the first new material for both the Leicester-born star and the American rapper.
“All my bitches with me and we paved our way,” Mahalia sings on the song, later asserting: “I’ve been bad from when I was a baby.”
“I made ‘Jealous’ on a sunny day at the end of Summer last year,” Mahalia said in a press release. “I was sat in the studio with Cadenza and Miraa May getting some stuff off my chest from the past few weeks. ‘Jealous’ was born pretty fast after chatting. It was a weird time… I was dealing with friends being super unsupportive about decisions I was making and I was struggling with navigating that.
“I’m really proud and excited about what came out in this song and I hope people love it in the same way we did when we wrote it. Rico Nasty is a badass and one of my favourite artists so getting her to feature was a huge moment for me!”
Nasty added: “COVID couldn’t stop shit! So happy to be part of this record with Mahalia.”
Mahalia is nominated for a Grammy at the 2021 ceremony, which will take place on March 15. She is up for Best R&B Performance for ‘All I Need’, her collaboration with Jacob Collier and Ty Dolla $ign.
Meanwhile, Nasty released her major-label debut ‘Nightmare Vacation’ last year. In a four-star review, The Forty-Five’s Kate French-Morris said: “You might argue that on ‘Nightmare Vacation’, Nasty gets caught up in her own wrath, songs tripping out of her mouth so fast they lose finesse. But rather than being too much, this is Rico’s point, her high-energy barrage of songs crushing barriers – both in music and wider society – that might be in her way.
“‘Nightmare Vacation’ is a statement of assertion, a necessary move if you want to forge ahead in the macho rap world. Rico Nasty raps, she sings, she spits, she screams. And she’s staying put.”
