Gossip – ‘Crazy Again’
After over a decade, indie-rock trio Gossip have reunited. The song is about being in love and feeling a sense of security. The instrumentation echoes the rollercoaster of feelings that you experience when you’re falling in love, with muted drums mimic the sound of a pulsating heart when you’re around someone that makes you nervous, and a dreamy guitar riff float in and out of the track, almost like butterflies whirling in the stomach. As far as Gossip goes, it’s a subdued, pretty number, but perhaps they’re easing us in gently to their big comeback.
H.E.R – ‘The Glass’
This is a crossover that doesn’t seem too far-fetched, but is unexpected nonetheless. Following their performance of the song on Saturday Night Live, H.E.R has released a solo rendition of the Foo Fighters track which features on their 11th studio album, ‘But Here We Are’. Taking the song to a new dimension with her soulful voice oozing with emotion, over subdued guitar playing and textural synths, H.E.R showcases what it means for a true artist to cover a song. Much like the magic of Nina Simone, you could be fooled into thinking this was the original song.
Biig Piig – ‘Watch Me’
Biig Piig’s latest release was birthed whilst she was spending time between London and Paris. It’s fitting then, that it conjures up imagery of such opposite scenarios. With its huge four-to-the-floor kick drum, you can imagine the track being played over a fashion show with the models stomping along the runway in time to the beat. Somehow, it could also be the soundtrack to an illegal warehouse rave, beats of sweat dripping off your forehead as you’re searching from room to room looking for somebody to spend the rest of the night with.
Mannequin Pussy – ‘Sometimes’
Mannequin Pussy’s frontperson, Marice Dabice, sings about the anger you feel when someone makes you desire them – especially when that desire distracts you from your fierce independence and the self-work you’ve been doing. “Why’d you go and take your life and try to fit it into mine?” they ask, and from the sweet delivery you can tell that they’re struggling to be angry as the sweetest takes hold. When they later sing, “I’m a giver I would give it all to you / Even if it meant that I would have to choose,” you understand how love trumps hate.
Shygirl – ‘thicc’
We may be entering the throes of winter where the nights are shorter and the afternoons are bright, yet icy, but Shygirl has offered another banger to help us stave of the winter blues for a little while longer. Originally written during the sessions for her debut album
‘Nymph’, which was released last year, ‘thicc’ is a sensual hot girl summer anthem which gives all the energy and motivation to help us transition into cuffing season with our eyes on the prize.
