Dua Lipa used to think “making happy pop music was cheesy”, the singer has revealed in a new interview.
Ahead of the Grammys this weekend (March 14), where Lipa is nominated for six awards, the pop star discussed her journey so far and second album ‘Future Nostalgia’.
“I’m definitely in a much happier place,” she told Gayle King on CBS This Morning. “I felt like with my first record as well, because I was going through so many personal obstacles in my private life, that it helped with the music. But where I felt like I was stuck a little bit was the idea that I had to be sad in order to make music.”
She continued: “So when I started making ‘Future Nostalgia’, I’m like, ‘There is no reason for me to be making sad songs’. I’m having the best time. Life is great and I just want to put some optimism out there and some fun and some excitement and some happiness.
“I had to overcome that because I felt like making happy pop music was cheesy.”
Lipa released ‘Future Nostalgia’ last March, scoring critical acclaim for the record. Last month, she released a new version of it, ‘The Moonlight Edition’, which followed last summer’s dance remix version ‘Club Future Nostalgia’.
‘Future Nostalgia’ is nominated for both Album Of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Album at the Grammys 2021. Lipa is also in the running for Song Of The Year, Record Of The Year and Best Pop Solo Performance with ‘Don’t Start Now’, as well as Best Pop Duo/Group Performance with ‘Un Dia (One Day)’, her collaboration with J Balvin, Bad Bunny and Tainy.
As part of ‘The Moonlight Edition’ of her second album, Lipa shared a new single ‘We’re Good’ last month. In an accompanying video, she took inspiration from Titanic, performing on a boat before it sank.
