Chika has covered Billie Eilish’s ‘My Future’ as part of Spotify’s Singles series.

The streaming platform has supported the Best New Artist award at the Grammys for the past five years and, with this year’s ceremony taking place virtually, has invited this year’s nominees in the category to record performances for Spotify Singles.

Alabama-born rapper Chika is one of eight nominees in the category, alongside Phoebe Bridgers, Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat, Kaytranada, Ingrid Andress, Noah Cyrus and D Smoke.

As well as recording a version of her track ‘U SHOULD’, Chika has also covered a song by Eilish, last year’s Best New Artist winner.

“I picked ‘my future’ by Billie Eilish as my BNA cover for Spotify because the song is beautiful and presents an interesting opportunity to talk about where I am as an artist, especially on the heels of this nomination,” Chika explained of the cover in a press release.

“My present is moving so fast that each passing moment is practically the future already. And I’m in love with the ride I’m on.” Listen to Chika’s Spotify Singles session above now.

The rapper will find out if she has won the award on Sunday, when the Grammys 2021 takes place in Los Angeles.

Chika responded to her nomination last year by getting a tattoo in honour of the moment. She shared a photo of her new ink online, which featured the date the shortlists were announced and the words: “I already won.”

She later responded to criticism from fans, saying in her Instagram Story: “This is a public service announcement ’cause motherfuckers are pissed about this on my arm and a lot of people think it’s stupid. But it’s like, ‘N****! This day I will always fucking remember, man. I’m getting to take my dad to the Grammys which is on my bucket list. When you have a sick parent you might – you know – give a fuck about things more than others might ’cause it’s not their life, it’s yours.

“Anyway, I’m happy and content with my choices. Everyone’s like ‘That’s so impulsive’. But I got a tattoo of the ‘Fred, my leg’ guy from Spongebob!”
