According to Mark Ronson, Charli XCX is pretty chuffed about where her song appears in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Barbie movie.
The ‘Vroom Vroom’ singer features on the Barbie soundtrack – produced by Ronson – alongside the likes of Nicki Minaj, Dua Lipa, Lizzo, Ice Spice and Haim and the placement couldn’t be more perfect.
At a listening party for the official soundtrack in London, Ronson shared a few words about producing the record, and recalled the moment he told Charli XCX where her song, ‘Speed Drive’ would appear in the movie.
“When you’re telling someone where you want their song in the film everyone wants to hear ‘opening credits’, or ‘closing credits’, but not car chase,” he laughed. “I remember Charli asked: ‘Where are you thinking this song is gonna go?’ And I said, ‘Err, I donno, car chase?’ under my breath. And Charli just said: ‘This speaks to me in an immense way.’ Because Charli is just so amazing and she just loves that raw energy.”
Ronson also talked about getting Nicki Minaj – whose fans are known as Barbz – to record a version of Aqua’s ‘Barbie Girl’ for the soundtrack with newbie rap queen, Ice Spice.
“Obviously having Nicki Minaj, who is the queen of the Barbz is amazing – she’s been keeping the term Barbie relevant in hip-hop culture for fifteen years now. She told everybody for so long: ‘I will never rap over ‘Barbie Girl’ because it’s just too obvious’ and so the fact that we have the queen of the Barbz with Ice Spice, rap’s most exciting new superstar, over this track in this film – I never would have believed it a year ago when we started putting it together.”
Barbie the movie is out on July 21 and stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken.
