With news that Britain could potentially be free of COVID restrictions by June 21 2021, Reading and Leeds Festival have tweeted that the two music festivals will go ahead as planned in August.
Reading festival has a capacity of over 100,000, which despite fans readiness to welcome back live music, has caused some to immediately question whether this is a step too far for 2021. However, moments after the announcement, the festival website crashed, suggesting many music fans are ready to get back in the fields.
Speaking to Radio 1, festival boss, Melvin Benn said: “The good news is that we can be very confident that Reading and Leeds is going to take place.”
Asked how the event could happen when others like Glastonbury had been forced to cancel, he told Radio 1’s Newsbeat: “In fairness, we haven’t done it, the government have done it. The government are vaccinating everybody and that’s how it’s going to happen.”
Liam Gallagher, Stormzy and Post Malone are due to headline the twin festivals this summer. On announcement, the festival came under fire for its male-dominated lineup which sees no women among the festival’s headliners for 2021.
While there seems to be a confidence from festival organisers that the music festivals can go ahead, no statement has been issued about what this means for the international acts, booked to play and whether they will be able to safely enter the country.
