Sabrina Kennedy – ‘Witch of the West’
In keeping with the Wicked: For Good hysteria sweeping the internet, Sabrina Kennedy’s latest single bridges the gap between her two greatest passions: rock ‘n’ roll and witchcraft. Kennedy’s connection to Paganism and Wicca stems from childhood, when she would visit the site of the Salem Witch Trials from her nearby hometown of Boston. Now based in Newcastle upon Tyne, the artist fuses the mystique of her upbringing with the rougher edge of the UK rock scene, conjuring up a sound that is both heavy and haunting.
SOAPBOX – ‘Boiling A Frog’
Glaswegian four-piece SOAPBOX capture the quintessence of punk rock in this ripping anti-racist protest song. Drummer Jenna Nimmo’s heavy yet uniform playing style strikes the perfect balance between raw and polished. Paired with vocalist Tom Rowan’s unadulterated Scottish accent, the track is a refreshing slice of true authenticity in a scene that all-too-often threatens to leave the spirit of punk in the past.
Cat & Calmell – ‘Rot’
Cat & Calmell’s ‘Rot’ is two minutes of throbbing, high-BPM dance floor euphoria. Taken from their brand new EP ‘LIVE LAUGH COOL STAR,’ the track is one of six electropop bangers celebrating hedonism, girlhood and youth culture. The Australian duo have become an integral part of the hyperpop sphere, and with four EPs already under their belt, we’re crossing our fingers that a full-length album is on the cards.
Big Sleep – ‘Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo’
‘Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo’ is the latest infectious, blissfully melodic offering from Dublin-based quartet Big Sleep. Originally formed as a duo by frontman Rónán Connolly and drummer Matteo Poli, the band has reached new heights with the addition of bassist Aidan Gray and guitarist Naiara Clarke Lafuente. With a punchy drum beat and tell-all lyrics picking through the pieces of a break-up, Connolly’s gravelly lead vocals are perfectly offset by Clarke Lafuente’s soft, airy backing.
Abbie Piper – ‘Better On My Own’
Cornwall-born, London-based Abbie Piper only released her debut single in September. By the time her third single dropped on Tuesday, she had racked up over 30,000 monthly listeners on Spotify and set a date for her first-ever London headline show (December 9th at Next Door Records Two). The staggering rate of her growth is not without good reason; Piper has nailed down the sultry stylings of all-time soul greats, as showcased in her brand new track.
