Tommy laphroa thank you for joining us
0:04
and having a little chat how is your
0:07
Festival season going so far
0:09
it's good this is our first Festival of
0:11
the Season nice it's a good place to
0:13
start we are just getting started on a
0:15
UK tour so this is like our first stop
0:17
yeah
0:20
nice and did you enjoy your performance
0:22
yeah it was really fun there was a lot
0:24
of wind everyone was having a good time
0:27
yeah it was really good and what are
0:30
your first impressions of farm on the
0:32
farm I mean we love Yeah and we've been
0:34
here and it's just it's a really good
0:36
space for artists like the community
0:38
it's it's such a chill place it feels
0:42
like it's a good place to try new
0:43
material and we just completely reworked
0:45
our lives at this is our first time
0:46
playing it oh nice it's the best place
0:48
to do it yeah it's just really Community
0:50
focused and a really positive chill
0:53
environment it is yeah that was some
0:56
hardcore fans in the audience I filmed
0:59
like this huge guy getting on his friend
1:00
so did you see him yeah he's amazing
1:02
yeah they're awesome I think they were
1:04
at our set last year too awesome it's
1:07
really cool to see them but you might
1:09
not have seen he tried so many times to
1:10
get on his friend's shoulders and I
1:12
filmed each take it was brilliant yeah
1:15
sometimes it takes like a real like yeah
1:19
[Laughter]
1:24
um okay and for those who don't know can
1:26
you talk about your name and where the
1:28
name Tommy laphroa came from yeah yeah
1:31
so Tommy La Frey is kind of an Ode to
1:33
Thomas laphroa who is the alleged
1:36
Heartbreaker Muse of Jane Austen so the
1:39
idea was kind of like it's like a
1:41
non-deflum of sorts and also we're both
1:43
writers and there's this sort of Trope
1:45
of the sad you know heartbroken female
1:49
writer we thought it would be funny to
1:51
sort of embody the other side of that
1:53
being the one that got away and so that
1:55
was kind of a character really taking
1:57
out of the band yeah oh amazing I didn't
1:59
know that that's so interesting
2:01
um you're about to go on tour what can
2:03
fans expect from the tour
2:06
yeah I mean Winter's on base now so
2:09
that's a big change yeah which is really
2:10
exciting we've made a lot of changes to
2:12
this that we used to both be on guitar
2:14
um now I'm playing bass and we're gonna
2:17
be playing songs from the second EP
2:19
um some of them we've never played live
2:21
before so that's really exciting
2:24
um fun cover
2:26
yeah yeah yeah we really reworked the
2:29
set and and honed in on a lot of things
2:31
that we didn't have time to before and
2:34
so we're really excited it's just kind
2:36
of a new feel your Rivals eat your
2:38
Rivals EP tackle some big themes
2:40
particularly women being pitted against
2:42
each other is that something you've seen
2:44
a lot in your experience in the music
2:46
industry
2:48
yeah yeah
2:50
you
2:53
so I mean yeah I think it's I I think
2:57
it yeah yeah but it's it's subversive
3:00
yeah you know nowadays maybe it's less
3:02
fashionable but it still exists and I
3:04
think I think we've been really
3:06
fortunate and in Indie music the
3:09
community uh
3:11
can be more friendly and there's less
3:14
concern about gender and I think but in
3:16
in certain genres and some of our
3:18
friends we've really seen them go
3:19
through it um just
3:21
yeah the comparison game and yeah
3:24
feeling like there's limited space yeah
3:30
yeah it's definitely something we've
3:32
seen but I think it's more subversive
3:33
it's it's sort of that pressure that's
3:37
maybe even unspoken but it's definitely
3:39
still a felt
3:40
and do you mainly tackle that through
3:43
your lyrics do you think or like
3:49
the song You performed last and you're
3:52
like this one's about feminism like do
3:54
you feel like that's a strong message
3:55
that you have to most definitely
3:56
incorporate into your lyrics it's like
3:58
you almost feel like it's your moral
4:00
responsibility to do that kind of thing
4:03
I mean it's funny when we wrote Dog Eat
4:06
Dog it was it was really hard to write
4:08
because we had this idea and this thing
4:10
that we wanted to say but we didn't want
4:11
to do it in a way that felt
4:14
to on the nose yeah
4:17
and so when we say that too it's kind of
4:20
like
4:21
a bit of a joke like yeah I think we
4:23
also use yeah humor as a coping
4:25
mechanism a tongue-in-cheek yeah and
4:27
sometimes when presenting these more
4:29
serious conversations it feels like we
4:32
sort of approach it ingest because
4:34
that's how we cope with things in our
4:36
life and so that's a big part of it and
4:39
I think it's important to feel like
4:41
people get that and they're in on that
4:43
with us yeah yeah because it's like we
4:47
all know
4:48
that there's still issues in those but
4:52
it's also
4:54
I think it's important to to maintain
4:58
Liberty and like and and take it with a
5:01
grain of salt and
5:03
um it felt like a more empowered stance
5:05
to sort of talk about it in that way
5:06
yeah definitely we know you're greatly
5:09
influenced by boy genius and you just
5:11
did an amazing Lana Del Rey cover who
5:14
else have you been loving right now or
5:16
what else is inspiring you right now
5:18
um we love Samia we just did a support
5:20
tour for Samia in the winter I'm like
5:25
what day is it earlier earlier this year
5:29
we did four times and that was
5:31
incredible getting to watch her set
5:32
every night we're huge huge fans of hers
5:35
um we love like Pine Grove Alex G Big
5:37
Thief the national yeah yes
5:41
right yeah
5:44
I don't know it is a hard question
5:45
because there's so many but then when
5:47
you ask you something to forget everyone
5:48
here I know it's yes we love like we
5:51
just love music yeah we're here so
5:53
yeah I feel like we're always listening
5:55
to eat always something there's this
5:57
band called Slaughter Beach dog oh yeah
6:00
I also love Florence and the Machine
6:02
I've been revisiting her latest record
6:04
yeah yeah
6:06
yeah amazing amazing
6:09
um songwriters yeah well and actually
6:12
we're doing a US tour
6:14
um in the fall and we asked like two of
6:16
our favorite artists like we got
6:18
Victoria bark and Haley blade who are
6:21
also wrote incredible Indie female
6:23
songwriters that we're gonna have on
6:25
tour with us which is really exciting
6:26
yeah
6:28
yeah and like genuinely big fans of
6:31
their music we're really excited for
6:32
them yeah are you sure yeah no I'm
6:36
really stoked a highlight that's so cool
6:39
yeah I bet you're so excited
6:41
um and finally are you guys staying
6:44
around when are you going who are you
6:46
hoping to see next whilst you're here
6:48
yeah so we're we are having to leave
6:52
tonight because this is the beginning of
6:54
our UK tour right
6:56
um but we want to catch Dylan Matilda
6:58
man uh we caught our friend Kate set
7:02
um yeah I think there's just like
7:04
there's so much talent at this Festival
7:05
yeah we're so excited it is yeah amazing
7:08
thank you so much yeah thank you you did
7:12
it I know it is kind of funny this I
7:14
feel like I was like leaning a lot in
7:16
there I was like not sure what to do
7:17
over here I feel like I know you so well
7:20
now
