Skating with MUNA's Katie Gavin... sort of
3K views
Feb 9, 2025
We went to a roller rink with MUNA's Katie Gavin to talk about going solo, loving cats and dogs in equal measure and working with Mitski. She didn't fancy skating, but that's OK, we still had a go.

I'm s for the 45 and I'm joined by Katie
0:21
Gavin hello hi thank you so much for
0:24
joining us welcome to London so thank
0:27
you welcome to London how long have you
0:29
been here I got here the morning of the
0:31
9th cool and have you had a nice time
0:33
I've had a great time yeah I played a
0:34
couple of shows that was really fun we
0:36
did rough trade and we played the old
0:39
church in Stoke Newton was cute and then
0:41
I've been doing interviews I heard that
0:44
you skate can you tell me more about
0:45
that you blade I do I'm a blader yeah
0:49
you said that with an American accent um
0:52
I sold my car in
0:56
2018 I so I was in LA without a car for
0:59
a couple of years
1:00
and I started blading and then where I
1:04
live in LA is kind of close to a roller
1:07
rank so I started going in the rink and
1:10
there's there were some people there
1:11
that like were Jam skating like skate
1:14
dancing and I thought that was cool so I
1:17
got some skates and started going to
1:19
like Venice Beach in my free time and um
1:22
learning how to jam skate and then the
1:24
pandemic happened and like everybody I
1:27
don't know if that happened in London
1:28
but everyone
1:30
the pmic happen no no not the pmic I
1:33
mean I mean like the thing where
1:35
everyone started roller skating yeah no
1:37
that's literally when I bought my roller
1:38
blades yeah yeah you have time to like
1:40
pick up a hobby I guess okay so my
1:42
roller skates got stolen okay in 2020
1:46
and then I couldn't get another pair for
1:48
like a year because everyone was buying
1:50
roller skates but yeah I I like skating
1:52
I'm just scared of like breaking my
1:55
wrists at this point my at my big age I
1:59
lost my knee pad and I lost my wrists
2:01
right I'm just kind of in raw dog in it
2:04
yeah you're hardcore you have decided to
2:06
embark on this solo record and I know
2:10
that a lot of Muna fans were panicking
2:13
that you guys were splitting up and I
2:15
believe we are here to confirm that
2:16
that's absolute rubbish right it's
2:19
rubbish okay it's not true come on no no
2:22
um yeah we're good if anything
2:25
like doing like a like doing promo and
2:29
stuff like without them I miss them so
2:33
much I texted them last night I was like
2:36
watching a video of our podcast when I
2:40
was going to bed just being miss you
2:44
guys um I love gatic I've been listening
2:48
to it I'm first of all I'm like addicted
2:50
to podcast I just love listening to
2:51
people talk loving gatic loving The
2:54
Vibes they're so funny um what other
2:57
podcast do you listen to honestly so so
3:00
many like
3:01
whatever um I listen to my favorite
3:03
murder oh yeah that's a good one yeah
3:05
that's quite good I like there's so many
3:08
I I listen to a lot of British ones too
3:10
okay cute but you know like when Spotify
3:12
does the Spotify wrapped at the end of
3:13
the year I I had like um 70,000 hours of
3:18
podcast listening that's insane I know
3:21
it's a bit mad do you just like not want
3:22
to be alone what your thoughts type of
3:25
vibe yeah that'll be
3:28
it
3:31
yeah that's exactly what it is just me
3:33
and the podcast I'm the same it's like
3:35
tick tock tick tock tick tock yeah into
3:38
Oblivion until I sleep yeah healthy
3:41
totally yeah wonderful album by the way
3:44
what a relief I was reading a few things
3:47
and uh I was quite intrigued by you
3:48
saying it was a lily Fair call MH so
3:51
then I started to look into Lily fair
3:53
and I was just like okay this makes
3:54
sense this makes a lot of sense so would
3:56
you say that those artists um well I'm
3:58
assuming they were your biggest
4:00
influence or inspiration yeah definitely
4:03
and like a lot of them were um like
4:05
women that I grew up listening to and
4:08
like people that made me want to be
4:10
songwriters in the first place and then
4:12
also it's been really cool like in the
4:14
last year I think like the universe has
4:17
kind of conspired to like put a lot of
4:19
them in my path like I've just like
4:21
crossed paths with um like I met Sarah
4:26
mclaughin she was working on her record
4:29
and we got got to do a song at Pitchfork
4:32
with Alanis moriset amazing um when I go
4:35
back to LA next week I'm going to play
4:38
or I'm going to um go to the Indigo
4:41
Girls show at the Greek and it's just
4:44
like a lot of those Elders I think like
4:46
definitely inspired me to be a
4:49
songwriter yeah iar um you talk about
4:51
love a lot in the album in fact um so uh
4:55
the collaboration with mitsky as good as
4:57
it it gets um yeah how did that
5:00
collaboration happen I mean it was like
5:02
very simple honestly the idea for that
5:05
song to be a duet um was Phoebe's idea
5:09
cuz she's kind of like myr person
5:11
effectively and she was like yeah you
5:14
should do a duet for this song and I
5:16
just thought about like who I would want
5:19
on the song and um I figured like why
5:22
not shoot my shot so I just texted her
5:25
and um she responded right away like wow
5:30
like minutes and was like God I love
5:32
that it was crazy yeah your voices work
5:35
very seamlessly together and I also hear
5:38
that you're um already writing like the
5:41
next record for Muna um is there
5:44
anything you can tell us about that no
5:47
no fair enough moving on no yeah you can
5:52
we're just lucky to like have really
5:54
supportive fans who want us to take the
5:57
time that we need and um
6:00
yeah I'm looking forward to like
6:01
hunkering down with my with my Bros I
6:04
mean we've kind of already touched on
6:06
this I suppose with like you saying that
6:07
you already miss the other girl the
6:10
other girls but like what's your
6:11
favorite thing about being in Muna I
6:13
mean they really are my best friends
6:16
like Naomi as a person they have been
6:21
Naomi and Joe are both my soulmates in
6:25
different ways and I think we just
6:27
compliment each other um really well
6:30
like in the creative process um I love
6:33
that yeah and also it's just like this
6:35
job is hard and I think being able to do
6:38
it with like your best friend that you
6:41
like people that make you laugh it like
6:43
makes it so much more doable it makes it
6:47
worth it oh totally yeah that's so
6:50
important um yeah I'm a big believer in
6:52
platonic soulmates big time yeah yeah
6:54
it's important best kind is there
6:57
anything you have gained so far with the
6:59
solo experience that you feel like you
7:01
can bring to
7:02
Muna um yeah I mean I think you know
7:06
when Muna was first starting cuz it was
7:09
like 10 years ago now um there was like
7:12
a lot of um experimental energy and just
7:17
like trying stuff and I think um anytime
7:20
you're like starting a new project um
7:24
that energy is very like inspiring and
7:28
so I think I think we're all kind of on
7:30
those like side quests in different ways
7:33
and like yeah I'm excited about like
7:36
what we are bringing back to Muna I
7:39
think if anything it's like kind of just
7:41
the confidence of like let me like try
7:44
something new instead of like um cuz you
7:47
can always get stuck in like different
7:49
kinds of ruts even if they're nice ruts
7:52
this is a personal question for me not
7:54
it might be we'll see it might be
7:57
personal for you but I'm in like a deep
7:59
loving romantic relationship with my
8:02
dog and uh sweet abig girl tell me tell
8:06
me more yeah yeah well okay so so also
8:10
in the pandemic I um had the honor
8:15
really of adopting two I got two Senior
8:18
Dogs so their mom passed away from covid
8:22
I didn't know her but it was like Mutual
8:25
like family friends actually joette's
8:27
mom my bandmate Joe mhm Jo's mom is like
8:30
a like a huge dog person and like he
8:33
always trying to rehome dogs yeah so so
8:36
they were my first like pets that were
8:38
just mine um Abby and Sparky and I had
8:41
Abby for like a year and a half um and
8:44
she they were both seniors when I took
8:47
them in and she passed away um and then
8:51
Sparky passed away like a year after
8:52
that so it was really intense but I also
8:56
knew taking them in yeah of course yeah
8:58
um that that was going to be like part
9:00
of the experience and I thought it was
9:03
really like heart opening and profound
9:06
to like um be with these animals like at
9:09
the end of their lives but yeah just
9:12
like having um a creature that was
9:14
really really dependent on me and like
9:18
it just felt like such a such an honor
9:21
and the grief was really intense yeah so
9:24
I think like people don't I I didn't
9:26
realize until I lost a dog but it's like
9:28
just how
9:30
intimate that relationship is yeah yeah
9:32
it can be so um yeah it was just like I
9:36
I it was a song that helped me like move
9:38
through that and so I'm glad it found a
9:40
place on the record yeah yeah yeah yeah
9:43
no it is lovely and I I started to look
9:45
at my dog differ I was like oh my God I
9:47
know it's really brutal no it's crazy
9:51
the the love that you can experience
9:52
with a dog although I'm I will say like
9:55
I have cats now okay oh I think I was
9:58
like I think I was like I can't I'm so
10:01
glad that they open My Heart in that way
10:03
but I'm like I can't do it again for
10:08
quite some time the pain the pain it was
10:09
intense well cat I don't know yeah cats
10:12
I'm not sure about cats no I love my
10:14
cats like I love them and I miss them
10:16
terribly but they're not as dependent on
10:18
me they not at all they're not dependent
10:20
on anyone no they don't really care like
10:22
if it's me or someone else exactly and
10:24
that I see I need to be needed so when I
10:26
come through the door my dog cannot
10:27
believe I'm still like alive that's so
10:30
cute I do have like kind of doish cats I
10:35
will say oh okay I'm really lucky in
10:37
that way like they want to cuddle and
10:39
they greet me at the door which is like
10:41
crazy yeah it's not normal for cats yeah
10:44
that that is nice okay doggish cats I
10:46
can handle that M we're done amazing
10:49
really off
10:51
incredible yeah dog and cat track
10:55
